Edmonton food incubator two years in the making receives good news with municipal and provincial funding

For Immediate Release, March 4, 2019

The Public - Alberta’s Food Incubation Hub, received good news that grant funding from both the City of Edmonton and the Province has been confirmed today.

Edmonton City Council voted to approve $600,000.00 for a facility in Central Mcdougall to cultivate local food entrepreneurs. It was a unanimous vote from the Executive Council. This amount will complement the $231,500 recently confirmed from the Government of Alberta.

The total $3,000,000 dollar project will support businesses by providing a production focused hub that will house provincially and federally inspected commercial kitchen spaces, industry-specific technical assistance and access to market opportunities to create real and lasting economic change for the Edmonton food industry. It will give Edmonton’s local food economy the boost it needs to get locally made food products with regional ingredients, on the plates of all Albertans and Canadians.

This funding stream will unlock other opportunities and allow for Phase 1 of construction to start as early as Spring 2019.

Once all phases are complete, the building will offer a total of 13 commercial grade kitchens, specialty equipment, a packaging and labeling area, storage, distribution, business support, co-working spaces, and research and development for all products incubated, as well as a consumer facing retail, cafe, grocery and event space.

For full details, please feel free to review the The Public Business Case available at the City of Edmonton. The Public and its affiliates would like to thank everyone for their support and to Council and the Government of Alberta for helping us to take the first step in this necessary facility for the food community.

The Public, which has been 24 months in the making, is a new collaborative venture by Wild Heart Collective, Makespace Group and Wild Heart Society for Vibrant Communities.
